A Safe threshold is only as strong as what each signer's device shows. No single hardware wallet wins.

WazirX said all three approving signers used Ledger hardware wallets. Over 230 million dollars left its multisig in July 2024. The devices protected the keys, not the decision.

Signers need a screen that decodes the transaction, the full hash as fallback, a secure element, fast firmware fixes, a trusted supply chain, and a different maker from co-signers.

Clear signing decodes a transaction into its action, amounts and addresses. Blind signing approves a hash or raw data. Decoding is software, so keep device apps current.

Ledger says Stax and Flex clear-sign Safe transfers in Ledger Enterprise Multisig. Trezor is open source, but Safe is not on its clear signing list. Keystone has an air-gapped mode, and GridPlus Lattice1 decodes nested calldata.

SEAL recommends different models and manufacturers. In 2026, Coinkite says a Coldcard firmware bug weakened seed generation, and Ledger says criminals fitted implants to genuine devices. One shared cause put many keys at risk.

Keep any one maker below your threshold. In a four of seven, that means three per maker at most. Buy direct, generate each seed on its own device, track advisories, and check every hash independently.

A Safe threshold is only as strong as what each signer's device shows.

WazirX said the three of its signers who approved transactions all used Ledger hardware wallets. Over $230 million still left its multisig in July 2024.

The devices protected the keys, not the decision.

This guide compares devices on what a multisig signer needs, not a single owner, and does not rank them. Vendor claims come from each maker's own pages, read in November 2026.

What Signers Need From a Device

The Security Alliance (SEAL) is blunt: "All signers must use hardware wallets." Beyond that, a signer's device should give you:

  • A screen that shows what the transaction does, not only a hash.
  • The full hash when it cannot decode, so you can match it.
  • A secure element, or equivalent protection, for the key.
  • Firmware you can update fast when a flaw is found.
  • A supply chain you trust, from factory to desk.
  • A different maker from at least some co-signers.

Safe's help center lists the fields to check on the device: to, value, data, operation, nonce and the gas fields.

An operation of 1 is a delegatecall and needs technical review. Safe's rule: "If you can't verify it, don't sign it."

Clear Signing and Safe Support

Clear signing means the device decodes a transaction into its action, amounts and addresses. Blind signing means approving a hash or raw data.

ERC-7730 is an open Ethereum standard for clear signing. Ledger launched Clear Signing in 2023, then published ERC-7730.

On May 12, 2026, Ledger handed its stewardship to the Ethereum Foundation's Trillion Dollar Security Initiative.

Ledger

Ledger Enterprise Multisig launched on October 23, 2025. It is built on Safe and syncs with existing Safe accounts.

Ledger says the device shows the full recipient, amount and token, and describes signer and threshold changes. Only Stax and Flex can sign in it; Nano X and Nano S Plus cannot.

Trezor

Trezor added ERC-7730 clear signing on September 7, 2026, in firmware 2.12.4 and later, for Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7.

Its launch list covers apps such as 1inch, Aave and Lido, not Safe. Unsupported contracts fall back to blind signing, showing a hash or "Data Present".

GridPlus and Keystone

GridPlus says Lattice1 firmware decodes calldata automatically, and since v0.16.0 decodes multicall patterns used by Safe.

Keystone's Safe{Wallet} guide adds a Keystone 3 Pro as an owner by QR code, on firmware 0.9.0 or newer. It does not say what the screen shows when signing.

Decoding is software, and software has bugs. Ledger's Ethereum app 1.23.0 (September 30, 2026) fixed EIP-712 array elements that "could bypass display filters". Keep device apps current.

The Devices Compared

Device Key protection, per maker Screen and connection Safe signing
Ledger StaxCC EAL6+ secure element (ST33K1M5)3.7" E Ink; USB-C, Bluetooth, NFCClear signing in Ledger Enterprise Multisig
Ledger Flex"Certified Secure Element"2.8" E Ink; USB-C, Bluetooth, NFCSame as Stax
Trezor Safe 7TROPIC01 auditable chip plus EAL6+ Optiga2.5" color; USB-C, BluetoothERC-7730; Safe not in launch list
Trezor Safe 3 and 5EAL6+ Optiga Trust MSafe 5: 1.54" color; USB-CERC-7730; Safe not in launch list
Keystone 3 ProThree secure chips, no level stated4" touchscreen; air-gapped mode, USB-CAdded as owner by QR; display not documented
GridPlus Lattice1Security mesh; chip not named5" touchscreen; WiFi or EthernetDecodes nested calldata

Openness differs. Trezor calls its code "100% open-source", and Keystone calls its device open source.

Ledger says most of its code is open source, but the low-level OS is not: its interface to the secure element "sits under NDA with the chip vendor."

Lattice1 reaches the internet through a router chip that GridPlus says is physically separate from its secure system.

Device Diversity Across a Signer Set

SEAL recommends "using different hardware wallet models and manufacturers." Two 2026 incidents show why.

  • COLDCARD, July 2026. Coinkite says a firmware bug weakened seed generation, and attackers regenerated keys offline. DefiLlama lists $116M lost.
  • Ledger, October 2026. Ledger says criminals fitted implants to genuine devices to capture recovery phrases, then resold them through Southeast Asian resellers. DefiLlama lists $93M.

Ledger says there was no flaw in its chip, OS or servers. Coinkite says updating firmware alone "does not repair the existing seed".

In both cases, one shared cause put many keys at risk at once. So:

  • Keep any one maker below your threshold. In a 4-of-7, no more than three signers per maker.
  • Buy direct from the maker. Ledger reminds resellers that returned devices can never be resold.
  • Generate each seed on its own device, and record the firmware version.
  • Track every maker's security advisories, and rotate keys when one applies.
  • Use a different address index for each multisig, as SEAL advises.
  • Sign from a dedicated machine. SEAL warns a work laptop "significantly increases the risk of malware interference."

Recommendation by Use Case

  • Decoded Safe transfers and signer changes: Ledger Stax or Flex with Ledger Enterprise Multisig.
  • Open, auditable hardware: Trezor Safe 7. Match Safe hashes on the device until Safe is clear-signed.
  • Air-gapped signing: Keystone 3 Pro, in its air-gapped mode.
  • Batched DeFi calls: GridPlus Lattice1, for its large screen and nested decoding.
  • Every signer set: two makers or more, plus an independent hash check before each signature.

Safe's help center points to OpenZeppelin Safe Utils and safe-tx-hashes-util for that check. For thresholds and roles, see multisig best practices.

The wallet software matters as much as the device. We compare it in the best multisig wallets for Ethereum.

How Guardian Helps

Guardian's OpSec audit tests how your team signs: what a signer actually sees before approving, and what it takes to slip a malicious payload past them.

With Managed Security, Guardian maps the keys, signers and multisigs behind every path to your funds. Its security operations team reviews every multisig transaction before it is signed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hardware wallet is best for signing Safe multisig transactions?

No single device wins. Ledger Stax and Flex clear-sign Safe transfers in Ledger Enterprise Multisig. GridPlus Lattice1 decodes nested calldata on a large screen. Trezor is open source; Keystone has an air-gapped mode. Spread signers across makers.

Is a hardware wallet enough to keep a multisig safe?

No. WazirX said its approving signers all used Ledger hardware wallets, yet over $230 million was lost. The device protects the key, not the decision. Signers still need to match the hash and decode the calldata before approving.

Should every signer use the same hardware wallet?

No. SEAL recommends different hardware wallet models and manufacturers. A firmware bug or tampered batch from one maker should never reach enough keys to meet your threshold.

What is clear signing on a hardware wallet?

The device decodes a transaction into its action, amounts and addresses, not a raw hash. ERC-7730 is an open Ethereum standard for it, used by Ledger and Trezor. Unsupported contracts on Trezor fall back to blind signing.
